Roo-Weekly Update 10.5.15

Good Evening Roosevelt International Middle School Families.

Dr. Casillas with your weekly school update.

Happy October. Our first month of school ended completely engaged in teaching and learning. Students understand the expectations, procedures and routines of being successful in an IB learning community. It is up to each student, with our support, to demonstrate Roughrider PRIDE-personal responsibility in daily excellence. This week on RooTube, we reminded students about appropriate behavior not only at school but on their way to and from school. Students please review your planner and Roosevelt’s dress code policy. It is important that you come to school dressed for success in Roosevelt uniform.

This Wednesday, students will be bringing home the Federal Survey Card. These cards are important, as every year, our district receives $8 million in Impact Aid funding based on the information you provide. Please return the cards as soon as possible. We need your help to receive the federal funds.

Eighth Graders turned in their Community Project Proposals and all seem excited. On Thursday, we will have a special Advisory schedule to meet their Community Project Supervisors and 6th  and 7th graders will engage in a service learning activity. Dismissal time will be as normal at 2:28 or at 3:30 pm for those with 7th period. Do not forget, PTSA Trick-or Trot Run is coming up. Students were sent home sponsor sheets.

Roo-Weekly Update 9.27.15

Good Evening Roosevelt International Middle School Families:

Dr. Casillas here with your weekly school update.

Last week we recognized Peace One Day. We started out on Monday with an awareness of international peace day and ended the week united together in dance. It was a great week. We are off to a great start of teaching and learning. This first month of school has been focused on the IB Learner Profile traits. In developing internationally minded young people, we remind our students about their personal responsibility in daily excellence starting with the IB Learner Profile. These traits are our foundation of our IB Program.

Parents just a reminder to please make sure your children arrive to school on time.  Learning begins promptly at 7:30 am everyday. The first month of school sets a pattern for the rest of the year.  Daily attendance is one of the most important factors in a student’s success at school.

We are excited to launch the afterschool activities for our students. We apologize for any confusion regarding afterschool program enrollments and ask for your patience. We set up a new system this year and due to some unforeseen glitches, we are still processing applications. Thank you for your understanding while we work through this process.

Our PTSA has a number of PTSA sponsored events for our school community. There is a Trik-or-Trot run on October 18th for all.  Additionally, PTSA sponsors a camp for 6th graders. This is a non-school sponsored activity. There is an informational meeting this Thursday. For more information on these events, please visit the PTSA website for more details at rooseveltptsa.org  Sign up to participate or volunteer. We thank our PTSA!

Have a great week of learning Rough Riders. Always do your best by working hard and making good choices.

Until next time, good bye and good night.

Roo-Weekly Update 9.20.15

Good Evening Roosevelt International Middle School Families:

Dr. Casillas here with your weekly school update.

School picture day is tomorrow, September 21st.  If your family elects to purchase a picture package, please bring the picture day envelope that was included in the back to school paperwork.   Speaking of back to school paperwork, students brought home a packet of important school information.  Please read, review, sign, and return the required school forms to your student’s first period teacher.
Roosevelt’s celebration of Peace One Day has been rescheduled to this Friday, September 25th. To prepare for this day, students have been practicing their Waka Waka dance. On Friday, all students will be provided with a Peace One Day  t-shirt courtesy of RooFriends, our Foundation.

Parents, we need your help. Traffic around the school has become increasingly busy and dangerous. We are asking for all drivers to adhere to all traffic laws when picking up children: driving at safe speeds, no stopping in the red zone, no double parking in the middle of the street and yielding to pedestrians. Students should walk in designated cross walks and cross when safe. As Upas Street is used for the loading of our nine school buses, we are encouraging all drivers to utilize Zoo Drive for pick up to alleviate traffic on Upas.  We need everyone’s assistance in keeping everyone safe and to eliminate any potential accidents between busses, cars and pedestrians.
And another reminder, school dismissal time is 2:28pm  and 1:24pm on Tuesdays. If your student is not attending Prime Time, please ensure they have a plan to go home immediately afterschool as there is no supervision on campus after 2:45 pm.

If you are interested in serving on our School Site Council (SSC) and/or our School Governance Team (SGT), please complete the nomination form found in the Back to School packet and also attached to this email.  Nominations are due this week.

Coffee & Tea with Dr. C is scheduled for this Friday in the Library beginning at 7:30. Please join us for an informal chat about Roosevelt.
Have a great week of learning Rough Riders.

Always do your best by working hard and making good choices.

Until next time, good bye and good night.

Roo-Weekly Update 9.13.15

Good Evening Roosevelt International Middle School Families:

Dr. Casillas here with your weekly school update.

What a smooth first week of school. Thank you all for your efforts in supporting the opening of the school year.  During the first 14 days of school, all students are reviewing school policies, the ten IB Learner Profile Traits and the concept of International Mindedness. Ask your student what it means do be an “inquirer” or “knowledgeable.” Our students are building their foundation for an international education.

In looking at our master schedule and actual enrollment numbers, there will be slight changes in our classes. Counselors will be working on adjusting for class size and balancing special programs. Every effort will be made to minimize schedule disruptions.

On Wednesday, students will be bringing home the Back to School Packet containing important enrollment paperwork. Please review the information, complete the forms, and return to your student’s first period teacher. If you have any questions, please call our front office.

I am excited to share that through our collaborative efforts with our PTSA, PrimeTime and YMCA, we have about 20 afterschool activities for all our students such as MEChA, Strategic games, Academic League and sports.  The brochure of activities and registration information will be sent home on Monday and are due to the Prime Time Office in Room 704  this Thursday, September 17th. As Prime Time is overseeing the activities, all students participating must have an application on file; however students do not need to stay after the activities are over.

To help maintain the after school activities, Roosevelt PTSA is hosting its second annual Trick or Trot 3K/5K Fun Run on Sunday, October 18th. This is a great, fun event.  Sign up, wear your costumes, take a little run and help support our school. Go the rooseveltptsa.org for more information.

Tomorrow, Monday Sept 14th will be a scheduled fire drill. Next Monday, September 21st is School Picture Day and Peace One Day.
Have a great week of learning Rough Riders. Always do your best by working hard and making good choices.

Until next time, good bye and good night.
